Architectural salvage finds

Whilst our team of reclamation experts are out selecting and saving building materials for our reclaimed brick stocks, they can come across some more unusual pieces of architectural salvage. Here at London Reclaimed Brick Merchants, we appreciate the beauty, character and history behind reclaimed materials and this extends to interesting antiques, of which we have now rescued many. This month, we thought it would be interesting to delve into our architectural salvage pursuits.

What is architectural salvage?

‘Architectural salvage’ is a broad description which can cover a vast array of building materials and items which have been recovered during demolition or remodelling work. These items are generally of antique age and can range from ornaments and building materials to tiles and furniture. Whilst this salvage may have been neglected or unappreciated by the original owner, other people – our reclamation team included – can recognise the appeal of saving a small piece of history.

The advantages of architectural salvage

Pieces of architectural salvage are often unique and can offer a beautiful blend of history and charm. From churches to hotels and pubs, nearly all old buildings which are being demolished or refurbished will have treasures which, without salvaging, would be scrapped or lost. Some of the advantages to choosing a piece of architectural salvage include:

  • You can add instant character and interest to your home or garden
  • You get the opportunity to own some truly unique and exciting items which are distinct from mass-made modern furnishings
  • You are preserving a small piece of history – who knows, there may be an interesting story behind your item!
  • Some pieces of salvage, or the techniques and materials used to make them, may not be used anymore or could be very hard to source new
  • Salvaged pieces can be notably cheaper than a new equivalent

Our salvaged pieces

We are constantly adding to our collection of salvaged pieces and, to hear about our most up to date stocks, simply get in contact with our friendly team. Within our current stocks, we have:

  • A classic natural stone fireplace, made from stunning white Carrara marble. This attractive marble comes from Tuscany in Italy and is the material used for many famous monuments, from The Pantheon in Rome and Michelangelo’s ‘David’ to Marble Arch in London
  • A dignified looking period painting depicting a chess game
  • An impressive, large Portland stone crucifix which was salvaged from St Joseph’s priory in Kent
  • Two weathered – yet still grand – gothic lion statues, ideal for garden and landscaping projects
  • Victorian stable paviors in various pink and red shades
  • Original stone troughs which make lovely planters or stand alone features in gardening and landscaping projects
